What is the significance of Comets and Asteroids in Bible Prophecy

By Catlin Burke

NASA says its only a matter of time before a killer asteroid strikes Earth, a catastrophe predicted in the biblical account of the end of the world.

Revelation 8:8 reads, “The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood.”

Scientists say that a large asteroid would create huge earthquakes and massive tidal waves, killing millions.

In Revelation it speaks of the sun being blotted out for three days. Biblical scholars say an asteroid strike would produce this dust, preceded by an event, like a great earthquake or other disaster, that would end life on Earth.

NASA spends millions of dollars to track any asteroids that fly near our planet and they say the Earth actually gets hit by a 100 tons of meteorite activity every day. However, every million years or so, a space rock large enough to be considered a killer asteroid, comes calling.

In the book, The End of the Age, 700 Club Host and CBN founder Pat Robertson talks about the fulfillment of the biblical description of the end of the world.

“There isn’t anything that will cause the seas to roil, that will, you know, cause the skies to darken, the moon and the sun not to give their light, the nations terrified on Earth of what’s happening. There isn’t anything that’s going to do that,” Robertson said.

“We’re big enough to draw some of them in. And as somebody said, it’s ‘blind luck.’ Well, it’s the mercy of the Lord. But if that mercy ever got lifted, whew. That’s what Jesus himself said!” he advised. “So, hey, just get ready. Get right. And stay right with the Lord.”

Can the symbolism of Revelation point to a cataclysmic event?

Michael Parker:

So many different denominations now becoming involved in end time bible prophecy claim that the symbolism of Revelation should be only taken as a symbol of something else, and should not be taken in the literal sense. However, one reading of the book of Revelation, guided by the Holy Spirit can easily come to the conclusion that symbolism and literalism both take place in the scriptures. Beyond the scriptures, are nations around the world in history who documented and recorded events that surrounded Comets in the night skies.

Historically, similar events took place each time these comets were viewed and recorded by the generations who were taught to do so, and what they could expect as a prediction of future events. During the visit of the Comet 2023 beginning very soon, science has calculated that this comet has not crossed our skies for some 80,000 years. This is a calculation based on man’s knowledge of Comets, their orbits, and their trajectory…which although is told to us is a science, is far from being solid and accurate.

These scientists use computer software that has mapped the heavens, and thus use it also to calculate the last time a comet had been seen in our universe. But for sake of argument, let’s assume that the comet approaching earth known as 2023 really has not been seen for 80,000 years. This would be a monumental event, because that long ago places the earth as a void of mass, with no life on it at all. This would have been at a time where God had not yet created and spoke into existence and the creation of Adam the man, animals, vegetation, the woman Eve, and all that was present from day 1 to day 6 forward of creation where God rested on them 7th day.

Therefore, we wouldn’t have a record of this comet passing through, any events that took place, or any documented history of this comet from the perspective and biblical point of view. And that’s if the science of this comet’s trajectory is correct…so, speculation regarding this comet will flourish, and we may go beyond the meaning of it with little to no concern regarding the most important part of it…and that’s on the date it appears.

One would need a telescope to discover faint objects in the evening sky, and during biblical times, one would have not had that leisure. The first telescopes were invented in the Netherlands in 1608 by Dutch spectacle makers Hans Lippershey, Zacharias Janssen, and Jacob Metius. Prior then to 1608, man could only rely on his naked eye to see comets in the night sky. What are some recorded events prior to the 1608 time frame that happened after a comet was seen in the skies by the naked eye?

“Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever” (Jude 13).

When Jude refers to false teachers, he likens them, among other things, to “wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever” (Jude 13). By “wandering stars,” Jude may be describing what we know today as comets. In any case, the analogy is evident: just as a false teacher sometimes appears as “an angel of light” (II Corinthians 11:14), so a comet in proximity to the sun has a brilliant tail of gas emanating from its icy head which is illuminated by the sun. The nearness of a comet to the sun is only temporary, for the comet soon departs to a remote region of the solar system where the diminished light of the sun cannot vaporize its icy mass. A comet far from the sun is invisible to even the most powerful telescope and can be described as residing in “outer darkness.”

This is probably the only reference in the Bible that could be applied to comets as such. Lack of mention of comets may be intentional. The shining, sword-like appearance of comets influenced pagan nations throughout history to regard them as omens of bad events (war, natural disasters, or death of kings). Comets were regarded as capable of influencing the lives of men on Earth. The Egyptians even worshipped them as celestial deities. The Bible affirms that the stars (and by inference, the comets) are not divine (Deuteronomy 4:19; 17:3) and do not disclose or control man’s destiny (Isaiah 47:13; Jeremiah 10:2; Daniel 4:7) as the nations of antiquity almost all believed. Perhaps because of their association with pagan practices, the subject of comets was best ignored by Bible authors. Scripture shows that the stars of the heavens are evidences of God’s handiwork in creation (Psalm 19:1–4), not as deities or omens influencing human life….Still one cannot ignore the facts surround the events that have taken place after comets have been observed, and the oral and written tradition of Judaism and the destruction of the world by Flood, was told and happened after Noah saw the sign of a comet in the heavens when GOD instructed him to build the ark.

What was the Islamic response to seeing Comets in the night skies? Most of it according to documented and historical times was ignored, unless Islam had a desire to conquer a nation, and then it was looked upon and planned in accordance to the belief of that nation.

Right now, we have a regional conflict that is growing more dangerous each day. Islam and Iran, radical terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah attempting to take out Israel, would diabolically look at these celestial events and plan accordingly to maximize the amount of infliction of an attack. Israel however is so advanced in technology with it’s military, that one would be foolish to attempt to use conventional warfare against Israel. And the GOD of our bible is the ultimate defender of the land of Israel. It will be in his timing with what happens to the jews and to the land.

This 2023 Comet appears at a time where a world “false teacher” would step on stage and be accepted by billions. It comes at a time where digital currency is nearly accepted by all nations and will replace paper currency, thus giving us a cashless society. It comes at a time where Israel is under attack and is increasingly being looked at by the world as a genocidal killer, being hated for defending itself and being accused of occupying land that the Palestinians say belongs to them. It’s citizens being massacred, raped, beheaded, burned alive by its’s enemies. It appears at a time where global conflict has reached a new level of nuclear fears. It comes at a time during a very contested and heated election for the leader of the free world. It comes at a time when the LBGTQ++ community demands we recognize their pronouns or be jailed. It comes at a time where immoral behavior and the teaching of that behavior even begins in 1st grade with Drag Queens dancing in front of children.

We very well could be looking at a historical omen that ushers in the Great Tribulation, The Anti Christ, and Armageddon. If that’s the case, how much closer to the return of Christ then must we be?
